CyberECG/electrocardiographic system, to
monitor the cardiac rhythm through GSM (Global
System for Mobile telecommunication)
A Hungarian SME offers a tele-medicinal
technology to monitor the cardiac rhythm. The
technology allows long-term, real-time
observation of cardiopathics. The used device is
miniature and lightweight. The signals are
processed fully automatically; it has direct
Internet connection without any computer. The
wireless communication is based on GSM system.
Co-operation partners are awaited.
A Hungarian company has been dealing with
electronic and medical system design, software
development, engineering and support since its
foundation in 1996. It is mainly specialised in
ECG (electrocardiogram) -related cardiology and
health informatics.
The death of many people is caused worldwide by
heart diseases and by diseases of vascular
system. The rate of mortality could be reduced
significantly by means of appropriate primary
preventive medical examinations.
In the offered technology the cardiac signals
registered by electrodes placed on the body of
the patient are conducted to a measuring and
processing instrument. The wireless
communication is based on GSM-GRPS IP. (GSM =
Global System for Mobile Telecommunications;
GPRS = General Packets Radio Services, IP =
Internet Protocol).
The signals of the instrument are forwarded by a
GSM-type mobile phone through a connection to an
Internet server. From this server, the data can
be downloaded and analysed from any place in the
world.
The measuring unit is able to perform a
real-time preliminary processing of the measured
signals, before their transmission and storage.
The program system consists of the following
modules: a database management module for
keeping a register on patients, a recording and
monitoring module, a display module, as well as
auxiliary modules for conversion, printing,
registration and other purposes. The technology
to be protected by copyright/trademark is even
able to produce an alarm, in case of an
irregular cardiac functioning. The technology
includes an ECG knowledge basis, containing
encyclopaedically all of the professional
information related to the ECG, as well as
collection of updated literature featuring the
last achievements of cardiologic science.
Main Advantages:
The technology contributes to the improvement of
life quality, because the patient can live his
normal life even for months, not obliged to
repeatedly take days off for medical
examinations. The work of the physicians also
becomes easier, because they can check the
results anytime, anywhere: the cardiac waves can
also be seen on the display of a mobile phone.
As the data obtained result from a medical
investigation of practically unlimited duration,
they offer statistically more reliable
information of the real condition of the
patient; therefore the technology represents a
step forward in the fields of prevention, as
well as finding exact diagnosis. The use of the
system is a cost-saving one compared with
traditional ECG instruments, offering the chance
of this vital examination for more patients than
at present. Based on the principle of managed
care, this tele-medicinal method can substitute
the expensive in-patient care and contributes to
the reduction of health-care costs.
Innovative Aspects :
The present personal ECG instruments (Holter
system) are only able to store the results of
medical examinations performed in one or maximum
two days. The patient shall subsequently visit
his physician who analyses the ECG data, and
dismisses his patient again. The suggested
technology however transmits the collected data
continuously via mobile phone to an Internet
database. This is a unique technology in the
world, observing the functioning of the heart
continuously, combining the advantages
characterising the Holter-type ECG, the
event-recorder-type ECG, and trans-telephonic
ECG.
