Information Security
Information security deals with
several different "trust" aspects of information. Another common
term is information assurance.
Information security is not
confined to computer systems, nor to information in an electronic or
machine readable form. It applies to all aspects of safeguarding or
protecting information or data, in whatever form.
Espionage
Espionage is the governmental or
corporate practice of obtaining secrets (spying) from rivals or
enemies for military, political, or economic advantage.
A spy is an agent employed to
obtain such secrets. Historically the definition was restricted to a
state spying on potential or actual enemies, primarily for military
purposes, but has extended to spying involving corporations, known
specifically as Industrial espionage. Most nations routinely spy on
their enemies, and allies, although they generally deny this.
Economic Intelligence
At the heart of any profit-making
company is sales. No matter how wonderful the technology or how
dedicated the manufacturing staff, without sales, the company fails.
To sell products and services, you
need sources for identifying potential buyers. With a little
ingenuity, you can probably create your own list of targeted sales
leads, simply using your modem.
Intelligence Documentation
The commands used to find files
are similar to those used in traditional databases.
Often, you can limit the search by
library, date, file name, or file extension. You can search for text
strings in the description of the contents of a file, or use key
words.
Intelligence Organizations
Data mining tools are intelligent
pieces of software which use a variety of complicated techniques to
reveal fundamental patterns in information.
They've been described as "virtual
data detectives". These technologies penetrate the surface of
day-to-day data and go deep into information bases and warehouses to
discover patterns, connections, trends and relationship - some
obvious and some not - and then present the finding in a meaningful,
often graphic, way.
