"Multimedia Reporting and Media Convergence Seminar"

WHAT: The Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism is accepting applications for this expenses-paid seminar that combines practical instruction in multimedia reporting with in-depth exploration of media convergence and other critical issues for online news operations. Participants will get:
· Four days of intense hands-on instruction on how to do multimedia stories for the Web, including filming with digital video cameras; doing storyboards, stand-ups, voiceovers and other broadcast techniques; capturing video, audio and still photos; digital video and photo editing; Web page creation and multimedia Web site design. You'll create an actual multimedia project as part of the seminar.
· Additional workshops on using the Flash animation program, live webcasting and geographic information systems.
· Panels and presentations by online publishing experts on topics like doing multimedia on a shoestring budget, converged newsrooms, Weblogs, charging for online content, and online publishing systems.
· An all-day brainstorming session with experts in new media on the most pressing issues in online publishing.
· Attendance at the 6th annual New Media Conference on March 28-29 co-sponsored by the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and USC's Annenberg School for Communication. The theme of this year's conference is: "Connecting with the Wired Generation: How Young People Use Digital Technology, the Internet and the Media"
WHO SHOULD APPLY? Print and broadcast reporters and editors who want to make the transition to multimedia journalism and professional journalists engaged in preparing their news organizations for convergence.
Fellowships include travel, lodging, meals and instruction.

Applications should include TWO copies each of: a resume; a 500-word statement of why this seminar would be valuable to the journalist; a supervisor's strong nominating letter agreeing to cover salary and incidental expenses; and three published articles (editors may submit edited work, broadcast journalists send one audio tape or videotape not over 30 minutes.)
